AES: Alliance of Sahel States solidarity at the heart of National Sabre 2024

The final of the 45th edition of the National Sabre, the traditional wrestling championship of Niger, highlighted the solidarity among the members of the Sahel States Alliance (AES). On Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the Salma Dan Rani Arena in Dosso, the joint presence of the Prime Ministers of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso showcased their collective commitment to promoting shared cultural and sporting values.

The event, beyond its sports significance, became a powerful symbol of unity and social cohesion. Each dignitary presented a prize to the top wrestlers, reflecting the active solidarity between the AES member countries. Ibrahim Abba from Niamey, the winner of the prestigious trophy, received a check for 12 million CFA francs from the hands of the Nigerien Prime Minister, while his runners-up were honored by their Malian and Burkinabe counterparts. This fraternal spirit garnered widespread public support, strengthening the motivation of the Confederation.

Traditional wrestling, deeply rooted in the cultures of the AES countries, serves as a means of bringing their peoples closer together. On this occasion, Burkinabe Minister of Sports Roland Somda announced concrete steps toward organizing the first Sahel States Alliance Games, an ambitious project under active discussion. This event demonstrates the AES countries’ determination to combine efforts and resources to strengthen their union through culture and sport.
