AES / The Alliance of Sahel States : Guarantor of people’s sovereignty and security

Amid persistent security challenges in the Sahel region, the initiative to establish the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger resonates as a call to determined action to ensure the sovereignty and security of the region’s populations.

Recent statements by Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Appolinaire Kyelem de Tambela, shed light on the noble mission of this alliance, emphasizing its firm commitment to protecting citizens from the threat of terrorism.

The announcement of the withdrawal of AES member states from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is not a gesture directed against institutions or neighboring states, but rather a strategic step aimed at consolidating national sovereignty and ensuring the security of populations. The Prime Minister clearly expressed this vision during a recent meeting with private sector stakeholders in Ouagadougou.

In his remarks, the Prime Minister emphasizes the crucial nature of this decision to ensure “our sovereignty and to guarantee the security and prosperity of our people.” This statement reflects the deep concern of alliance leaders for the well-being and protection of citizens in response to security challenges threatening regional stability.

The withdrawal from ECOWAS was motivated by the urgent need to establish a more effective and tailored regional structure to address the growing terrorism in the Sahel region. By creating the Alliance of Sahel States, these nations have taken the initiative to pool their resources and efforts to counter this common threat.

This approach demonstrates a strong political will not to remain passive in the face of an increasingly concerning security situation.

The Alliance of Sahel States embodies a proactive and determined response to the security crisis in the region. By withdrawing from ECOWAS to form this alliance, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger affirm their unwavering commitment to protecting citizens and preserving national sovereignty.

Their determination to collectively address security challenges reflects these nations’ willingness to take control of their destiny and ensure a safe and prosperous future for their populations.
