AES: The confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States soon a reality
The steps toward the creation of a Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) continue, aiming to establish legal texts governing the functioning of this association of sovereign states. Another meeting of the foreign ministers of the three AES member countries is taking place this Friday in Niamey, the capital of Niger.
This follows the meeting of experts and senior officials from the three member countries of the AES, held on Thursday, May 16. They reviewed the founding texts of the confederation, which are to be harmonized and validated by the ministers responsible for foreign affairs of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
These texts include the draft Treaty for the establishment of the Confederation, the draft Internal Regulations of the College of Heads of State, and the draft Final Communiqué of the inaugural summit of the College of Heads of State of the AES Confederation. The aim is to have unanimous texts that reflect their common vision of building the confederation.
The validation of these texts by the heads of state of the AES member countries will mark the foundation of the Confederation and a crucial step in institutionalizing and operationalizing the Alliance.
It is worth noting that the Confederation, in its sovereign mission, will focus on three priority areas : Defense and Security, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, and Socioeconomic Development in these three partner countries of the Sahel. Each of these areas presents challenges that must be addressed for the benefit of the peoples of this regional space.
