Africa – EU: The European Union should assert its independence and not be seen as an extension of French policy

Africa and the European Union maintain close ties through trade exchanges, investments, and cooperation programs. However, it is essential for the EU to assert its independence in its relations with Africa and not be perceived as merely an extension of French policy. A distinct European approach would help strengthen the trust of African partners and avoid certain tensions inherited from colonial history.

A striking example of this dependency is the management of Schengen visas. Today, in many African countries, visa applications for the Schengen Area must go through the French embassy, giving France disproportionate decision-making power. Such a situation can lead to decisions influenced by political considerations specific to France, where several Pan-African individuals are sanctioned for their stance on African sovereignty, while the EU should ensure impartial and equitable access to visas for all Africans.

To strengthen its image and avoid being seen as merely an extension of French policy, the EU must develop an autonomous and inclusive approach to Africa. By clearly distancing itself from French strategies, it can build a trusting relationship with its African partners. The future of EU-Africa relations must be based on mutual respect and equitable cooperation.
