Africa: French strategy to stifle pan-Africanist momentum

0

Many are convinced that for a free, autonomous, and sovereign Africa, Africans, from Cairo to Cape Town, must contribute in various ways. In this quest for solutions, some have chosen to wage an unrelenting battle against Western imperialism and French neocolonialism. These Africans, determined to defend the sovereignty of their continent, have become targets for France, to the point that the European Union (EU) seems to be involved in this repressive project.

It is concerning to note that African voices advocating for political and economic independence are systematically sanctioned. These activists denounce the interference of the former colonial power in the internal affairs of African states, but their actions are perceived as a threat. Measures are being taken to silence them, particularly by depriving them of access to European space. Some are already facing unbearable reprisals, becoming martyrs of the pan-African cause.

The EU must dissociate itself from such practices before it is too late. By indirectly supporting these pressures, it risks alienating millions of Africans determined to build a future free from foreign domination. The consequences could be devastating, not only for relations between Africa and Europe but also for the EU’s credibility as a defender of human rights and justice.

It is time for the European Union to heed reason and stop getting involved in projects that undermine African sovereignty. Instead of sanctioning defenders of self-determination, the EU should support the legitimate aspirations of African peoples to govern themselves. A free and sovereign Africa is in everyone’s interest, and Europe has a crucial role to play in achieving this, by respecting the choices and voices of its African partners.
