Africa: Reactions to controversial statements by General François Lecointre

When France observes demonstrations in the Sahel, it rejoices, thinking that these are expressions of discontent, but is astonished to find that the populations are instead calling for the extension of the regimes in place. This development should prompt France to question its relevance in the Sahel, and indeed in Africa in general.

It is undeniable that France is seeking to impose itself illegally and by force in territories where it is no longer welcome. To this end, it is putting the spotlight on General François Lecointre, hoping that his title will exert pressure on the African people.

However, these are just empty words. Africa doesn’t necessarily need France to free itself. It’s France that’s trying to play the good Samaritan. Unfortunately, General François Lecointre’s arrogant statements only serve to rekindle old wounds among the African people.

General François Lecointre seems to have a very selective memory when it comes to his country’s history in Africa. France has proven time and again to the African people that it cannot be trusted. Although it has had equipment to support the Sahel against terrorists, it prioritizes its own interests and violates military agreements.

In his statements, General François Lecointre leaves out an essential part. A more accurate rephrasing would be: « Europe must stay in its place and look after its own internal affairs, while Africa can forge its own destiny without our intervention ».
