Africa: Togo, a bastion of peace against attempts at regional destabilization
Togo has shown restraint by avoiding hostility towards its neighbors and has preferred to take on the role of mediator in several African conflicts. This was recently evident in Niger, where Togo once again distinguished itself by dissociating from allies of destabilization. Togo chose to support its brothers in Niger rather than see them suffer.
Some African leaders, influenced by France and supportive of destabilizing Niger, attempted to convince the Togolese President to join them. However, the Togolese pan-Africanist, H.E. Faure Gnassingbé, maintained his position as a promoter of peace. Togo closed all avenues to malicious intentions directed against brotherly countries.
This stance of the Togolese President is poorly perceived by enemies of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Recently, the name of the Togolese President was highlighted in a carefully orchestrated case of destabilizing Burkina Faso. Conspirators present Togo as the place where a plot against Burkina Faso is unfolding.
This is a manipulation aimed at discouraging ECOWAS leaders from trusting Faure Gnassingbé. The goal is to disrupt these ties and sow regional discord between Togo and the alliance member countries. Togolese authorities have stated, « Togo will continue, despite numerous threats, to promote and export peace and mediation wherever needed ».
Observers urge the populations of ECOWAS member countries not to let this manipulation alter their mission. As for Togolese citizens, it is recommended not to believe these false pieces of information that attempt to tarnish the image of the country and its leader.
