Algeria: President Tebboune declined the main axes of social policy implemented in recent years at an international seminar

The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reviewed the main outlines of the national social policy on Monday, highlighting the efforts made by the State to firmly establish the social character of the Algerian State. This unchanging principle was enshrined by the November 1st Proclamation, laying the foundations for a social protection policy based on the principles of justice and equal opportunities.

In his message to participants at the international seminar on «Social Achievements with Economic Stakes», held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center and delivered by Prime Minister Mr. Nadir Larbaoui, President Tebboune recalled the launch of an «ambitious program to strengthen social achievements, particularly in meeting citizens’ basic needs and services, while adopting an approach based on enhancing the quality of these services and ensuring equality in access»,

He further emphasized that «public policies in recent years have been directed towards supporting citizens’ purchasing power by enhancing salaries for over 2.8 million civil servants and contractual employees, reinforcing fiscal justice, and ensuring the coverage of basic needs, especially for vulnerable categories. Additionally, this encompasses strengthening various social assistance programs, including enhancing pensions for individuals with specific needs and those in need, and improving the performance of the Alimony Fund for divorced women with custody of children».

In the same perspective, the President highlighted «the considerable efforts made in social transfers, which represented 18.45% of the state’s general budget for the year 2023, to address challenges arising from the rise in prices of basic commodities in international markets and to prevent its impact on citizens’ living standards».

Discussing policies related to human development, President Tebboune underscored «the particular focus on the development of the Education and Teaching sector, which is constitutionally guaranteed to be free, and the state’s efforts in promoting Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Vocational Training services. This includes support for industrial and technological innovation and adaptation to the labor market’s requirements and the goals of the overall economic development policy, while tirelessly working to improve the socio-professional situation of staff in this important sector, in addition to the revaluation of university scholarships benefiting over 1.3 million students».

«These efforts are concurrent with ongoing reforms to enhance healthcare provision, based on a strategic vision aimed at achieving health security and improving the efficiency and performance of the sector. This involves strengthening healthcare structures, particularly local public health institutions, digitizing the healthcare sector, and enhancing the socio-professional achievements of its staff». he concluded.
