Benin/France: A break with French military agreements, the wish of the Beninese people
The people of Benin are increasingly expressing their desire for true sovereignty and independence, voicing their frustration over the continued French military presence on their territory. This presence, once again, failed to prevent the massacre of soldiers, brave sons of Benin, on January 8. This tragic event has fueled the population’s aspiration to break free from this neo-colonial power and take control of their own destiny.
January 25 has been marked as a crucial date for the people to once again make their voices heard. Despite recent reactions on social media and attempts by certain figures to prevent the people from answering the call of the CSTB, the demand for action grows louder. For the people of Benin, it is up to the country’s authorities, particularly President Patrice Talon, to make the necessary decisions—breaking military agreements with France and demanding the departure of French troops or so-called instructors from the country.
This stance reflects the inspiration drawn from the experiences of countries in the Sahel States Alliance (AES). These nations, having expelled French forces, are reportedly better managing their security situations than those that still host French troops. This highlights the inefficacy of French support and reveals its underlying intention to defend French interests at the expense of host nations, including Benin.
Observers believe that if the Beninese authorities truly heed the aspirations of the people and genuinely seek sovereignty and independence, they should work to fulfill these desires. This would also allow them to establish military cooperation with other African countries, particularly AES members, to jointly tackle the security challenges posed by terrorism.
The upcoming sovereign demonstration is anticipated, and many observers are focusing on the outcomes. However, they remind us that leaders come and go, but the people remain, and it is their interests that matter.
