Burkina Faso: Attempted attack on a sentinel at the presidential palace; suspect subdued
According to the Burkina Information Agency (AIB), as reported by several other media outlets, a suspicious individual attempted to attack a sentinel stationed at the presidential palace in Koulouba. However, the vigilance of the presidential guard quickly thwarted the attempt, and the individual was subdued. No damages were reported.
On the afternoon of Friday, May 17, gunfire was heard near the Koulouba presidential palace. The incident involved a malicious individual who tried to assault the sentinel on duty. The presidential guard swiftly responded, and the individual was subdued. Fortunately, the gunfire did not cause any damage, as confirmed by the AIB.
The AIB sources have urged the public not to panic and to continue their daily activities without fear. This incident marks the first attack of its kind since Captain Ibrahim Traoré came to power.
As of now, no further details have been provided regarding the nature of the suspect or their actual motivations. However, it is noteworthy that external enemies of Burkina Faso and their local accomplices are struggling to accept the firm determination of the Head of State to eradicate terrorism and lead the country to true independence.
Consequently, they are multiplying attempts to thwart this effort. But they underestimate the reinforced security measures and the unwavering support of the people for the transition and President Traoré.
A spontaneous mobilization of young people at the United Nations roundabout on March 29, 2023, after sporadic gunfire was heard near the Burkinabe presidency, serves as a reminder. « Anyone who messes with Captain Traoré will have to deal with us »,warned one demonstrator.
Given the current context in the country, security has been strengthened in military zones around Ouagadougou.
