Burkina Faso: Burkinabe citizens repatriated from Sudan

A first convoy of 28 Burkinabe living in Sudan and repatriated due to the fighting in the country were welcomed on Thursday evening by a government delegation at the international airport of Ouagadougou.

«The Sudan is facing a crisis that has created a difficult situation, which has caused the departure of several foreign communities and unfortunately our nationals who are in Sudan have not escaped from this situation», said the Burkinabe minister delegated for Burkinabe living abroad, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré.

He added that more than 500,000 Burkinabe live in Sudan.

The minister in charge of humanitarian action, Nandy Somé/Diallo, has assured that arrangements have been made to provide accommodation and food rations to the repatriated citizens from Sudan before they are reunited with their respective families.

Meanwhile, the president of Burkinabe students in Sudan Yacouba Ouedraogo, has explained to the press that the situation in Sudan is very difficult for students.

This is the first convoy of Burkinabe citizens to be repatriated from Sudan due to the ongoing conflict in the country. According to diplomatic sources, there are still a significant number of Burkinabé living in Sudan who may require evacuation.

Several other countries have already evacuated their citizens and diplomatic personnel from Khartoum since the start of the crisis, as fighting continues to escalate in the Sudanese capital.
