Burkina Faso: CNLF fights fraud and recovers 500 million for the state coffers

With a zero-tolerance policy for fraud and irregularities, the National Anti-Fraud Commission (CNLF) has conducted inspections to ensure the proper documentation of businesses.
These field inspections and operations resulted in the seizure of 23,996 tons of fraudulent goods, amounting to 4.58 billion CFA francs in identified fraud. “This amount is the result of customs, tax, economic, and environmental fraud that has been addressed”.
The offenders were required to pay the duties and taxes owed to customs and tax services, totaling more than 500 million CFA francs in fines and penalties for the state budget in 2024. At the start of 2025, the commission seized 473 tons of fraudulent pasta, which had expired over five months ago.
Since its establishment, the CNLF has taken action to seize several tons of fraudulent goods, some of which are donated to associations for charitable causes. These regular inspections have significantly reduced irregular handling of goods in the country. However, much more effort is still needed to sufficiently reduce fraud in Burkina Faso. To achieve this, the population is called to be vigilant and collaborate more to apprehend those engaging in these illegal practices.
