Burkina Faso: Demonstrations/ New constitution yes, but is it the right time to hold elections?
On Friday, September 29, 2023, demonstrations were held in several cities of Burkina Faso as part of the one-year anniversary of the president of the transition, Ibrahim Traoré, head of state.Each organizer with his slogan. In Ouagadougou, the demonstrators demand a new constitution, which meets the aspirations of the new generation. This generation wants to get rid of all the colonial shackles, and fully assume its sovereignty.
In Bobo-Dioulasso, the Tiéfo Amoro square was also the scene of a large meeting, the demonstrators came from different horizons to express their desire to change the constitution while guaranteeing the unwavering support to President Ibrahim Traoré. The organizers proclaim among other things «For a free and prosperous Burkina, let us say no to the elections without the reconquest of the national territory; no to all forms of destabilization of the transition; yes to the rereading and the adoption of a new constitution».
The same goes for Dédougou where the demonstrators support the transition and find that the elections can wait. For the people of Dédougou, the first year of management of state power by the MPSR, under the leadership of the captain president, was marked by courageous decisions whose objective is to restore the dignity and full sovereignty of the Burkinabe people. The tribune then said he was grateful to the Head of State for the efforts to regain parts of the national territory under terrorist control.
Overall, the Burkinabe people recognize themselves in the actions carried out by the President of the transition during the last 12 months for peace and tranquility. All of these events reflect the expression of a people seeking their freedom and dignity. The rest is just a matter of timing.
