Burkina Faso/EU: Professionalism of fighting forces reiterated to EU
« The work of the FDS and VDP in Burkina Faso against terrorism is carried out with professionalism, ensuring respect for human rights », stated the Chief of Staff of the Burkinabe Ministry responsible for diplomacy. This statement was made during the commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of the creation of the European Union (EU), organized by the European representation in Burkina Faso.
The Burkinabe government has reiterated its stance before the EU delegation regarding the professionalism of Burkinabe combat forces on the battlefield. This comes amidst recent accusations questioning the integrity, sacrifice, and professionalism of the fighters.
These accusations, coming from EU leaders and other international actors, stem from the biased report by HRaW linking alleged abuses committed by the fighters against civilians in Burkina Faso.
The government had previously expressed astonishment at the behavior of the EU, which is expected to be discerning, ensuring the accuracy of the information provided and the adherence to the methodology of the investigation purportedly conducted by HRW. Furthermore, the country’s authorities have initiated investigations into these accusations, which are still ongoing.
Instead of baseless accusations, the Burkinabe government desires sincere support from the EU in the fight against terrorism and effective and fair assistance to vulnerable groups affected by the humanitarian crisis. Regarding the respect for human rights, it remains the priority of the country’s authorities, according to the government representative at this event.
That’s why these authorities are committed to upholding them at all times and in all places, including within the context of restoring territorial integrity. At present, the 65-year-old cooperative relations between Burkina Faso and the EU are deemed excellent, but it’s important to further nurture trust, sincerity, and mutual respect for each other’s culture and ideals, in the general interest of the peoples involved.
