Taking action alongside his words, the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, is increasing the number of Rapid Intervention Battalions (BIR) to intensify and enhance the fight against armed terrorist groups that continue to operate in certain areas of Burkina Faso. On December 31, the day before the New Year, the head of state announced in his message to the nation the creation of five (05) new Rapid Intervention Battalions (BIR).

True to his word, just two days after the announcement, the president, determined to eradicate terrorism as quickly as possible to pave the way for effective development, officially established three (03) new BIRs on January 2, bringing the total number of BIRs in Burkina Faso to 28. These combat units are based in Arbinda, in the Soum province in the north of the country, in Ougarou, in the Gourma province in the east, and in Diapaga, in the Tapoa province, also in the eastern region.

President Ibrahim TRAORÉ also appointed the leaders of these three new BIRs to ensure that these combatants would be ready to take action and serve the country as quickly as possible. Their main mission, according to reports, is to intervene swiftly and decisively, prioritizing mobility and firepower in the face of any threat to the national territory’s integrity.

They are also tasked with escorting large logistical convoys for the national armed forces or other organizations, assisting in the fight against serious crime alongside internal security forces, and preserving and continuing military traditions. The head of state has promised to continue acquiring the necessary equipment to further strengthen their combat capabilities.
