Burkina Faso/Food self-sufficiency: Government joins progress on fisheries project
Implemented a few months ago, the fish production initiative at the Samandeni dam in the western region of Burkina Faso is now underway. This ambitious project is part of the presidential initiative for the 2023-2025 agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries offensive, aimed at effectively meeting the food needs of the Burkinabe people.
The fish production project, particularly tilapia, at the Samandeni dam, which currently includes 180 floating cages, was launched four months ago according to official information and is already showing results. After this period, 100 tons of tilapia are expected to be harvested, with 15 tons already fished last weekend in the presence of government officials.
For Burkina Faso’s executive branch, this is already a significant achievement as the project’s initial results bring satisfaction and hope for reaching the anticipated goals, including the production of nearly 100.000 tons of fish by the end of 2025 to meet at least 50% of the country’s national consumption needs.
This demonstrates the determination and commitment of Burkina Faso’s authorities to achieve effective food sovereignty. Like the fisheries sector, other sectors deemed strategic by the government within this presidential initiative are also yielding promising and encouraging results, such as the agricultural production of cereals intended for national consumption.
It should be noted that President Ibrahim TRAORE’s ambition is to eliminate the need for importing food products that can be easily produced on Burkinabe soil. Both national and foreign investors are invited and encouraged to engage in these sectors, which present numerous opportunities.
