Burkina Faso: Government reaffirms suspension of cereal exports to protect food security
The Burkinabe government recently reiterated that the suspension of cereal exports, implemented on December 19, 2023, remains fully in effect. This measure, initially introduced to safeguard national food security under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Faso, aims to ensure a sufficient domestic supply in the face of rising prices and climate vulnerabilities.
This reminder follows reports from the authorities, who have observed that some traders continue to export cereals, particularly cowpeas (niébé), despite the ban. Such actions violate government directives and jeopardize the availability of essential food products for the Burkinabé population, worsening the food situation in some regions.
The authorities have intensified inspections to identify and penalize offenders. This reinforcement of measures is aimed at protecting national reserves and preventing shortages that could destabilize the market. The government is calling on all stakeholders in the sector to comply with this export suspension, emphasizing that the priority is to meet the needs of the Burkinabé people.
In this context, the government is also exploring strategies to support local farmers and encourage domestic production, ensuring sustainable and accessible food security for all citizens.
