Burkina Faso: Helmet awareness, a life-saving measure for all

0

Since the beginning of 2024, a new regulation in Burkina Faso mandates that individuals who own a motorcycle must wear a protective helmet. This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve road safety and is aligned with a national strategy aimed at reducing fatal accidents. Starting in January 2025, this requirement will be extended to the entire population.

In Burkina Faso, where motorcycles are the primary mode of transportation for a large majority of people, road safety remains a significant challenge. Recent statistics show that motorcycle-related accidents are still a major concern, often resulting in severe consequences due to the lack of helmets. According to public health experts, wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by 70% in the event of an accident.

In addition to public awareness campaigns, the government is working with partners to make helmets more accessible to all citizens, both in terms of availability and affordability. Authorities also plan to strengthen enforcement measures starting in January 2025 to ensure strict compliance with the regulation.

Sanctions will be accompanied by educational reminders to encourage long-term behavioral change and promote safer road practices.
