Burkina Faso: Mahamadou Issoufou at President Traoré’s, transition missions on the menu.

The ECOWAS mediator for Burkina Faso, Mahamadou Issoufou, visited the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore, on Saturday 26 November 2022 at the Presidency of Faso. This is the second visit of Mahamadou Issoufou to Burkina Faso. The conduct and missions of the transition, were the key topics of the meeting. The visit is a prelude to the ordinary summit of ECOWAS Heads of State, scheduled to take place in Abuja, Nigeria, on 4 December 2022.

“I received in audience a delegation of the Economic Community of West African States led by the mediator of Burkina Faso Issoufou Mahamadou,” the Burkinabe Head of State wrote.

The two high officials also discussed the issue of the transition monitoring and evaluation committee. The ECOWAS mediator said he had had exchanges in a very frank atmosphere, which enabled him to have a perfect identity of views on all the issues discussed and welcomed the openness to dialogue of President Ibrahim Traoré.

The former Nigerian President asked for President Traoré’s support to ensure a strategic evolution, security and development in the countries of the geopolitical Sahel, which includes all countries under threat from terrorism and organised crime. The President of Faso agreed to support this request. President Traoré promised to respect the commitments to ECOWAS on the organisation of elections by July 2024.

One month after his arrival, President Ibrahim Traoré is already putting in place strategies to try to reconquer the territories occupied by the armed groups. To do this, he is counting on a patriotic and popular mobilisation of all Burkinabes to counter the jihadist violence.
