Burkina Faso: Merit-based promotion, a salutary reform for the Army

0

Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré came to power, a major reform has been transforming the Burkinabe army, particularly in the process of granting promotions. Long tainted by practices based on personal affinities or clan affiliations, the awarding of ranks often led to frustration and division within the military.

In the past, promotions were often seen as privileges reserved for certain groups, eroding cohesion and trust within the ranks. These practices, far from strengthening the army’s effectiveness, heightened internal tensions and undermined the teamwork essential for national defense.

Today, thanks to the new measures implemented, meritocracy has become the central criterion for advancement within the military hierarchy. This approach now promotes selflessness, courage, and competence. Every soldier, regardless of their background or connections, can aspire to higher responsibilities based on their performance and dedication.

This reform has already had visible impacts. Many soldiers and officers express a renewed sense of motivation, confident that their efforts will be recognized and fairly rewarded. This dynamic is helping to strengthen unity and discipline within the army—two crucial elements in addressing the security challenges Burkina Faso faces.

The return to a merit-based system represents a significant step forward for the Burkinabe army, restoring its dignity and its primary mission: to serve the nation with honor and impartiality. This reform, praised by both observers and citizens, reflects the new leadership’s determination to build a strong and exemplary army capable of effectively defending the country’s territorial integrity.
