Burkina Faso: National Conference of May 25th / the sovereign people have spoken; Ibrahim Traoré is President of Burkina Faso until 2029

The national conference, originally planned for two days, concluded its deliberations on the first day. According to the revised transition charter signed by Captain Ibrahim Traoré on Saturday, May 25, 2024, the transition mandate is extended for 5 years starting from July 2, 2024.

Additionally, Captain Ibrahim Traoré is no longer the President of the transition but now assumes the role of President of Burkina Faso. Furthermore, he is now eligible for any position he wishes to pursue, including the possibility of running for the presidency at the end of the transition period. This new provision also applies to the Prime Minister and the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Transition (ALT).

Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s status has changed. He is now the President of Burkina Faso, Head of State, and Supreme Commander of the National Armed Forces until 2029. This decision stems from the immense trust the Burkinabe people have shown in the leader of the MPSR party, granting him 5 years to lead the country. These decisions are outlined in the new charter adopted and signed following the national conference, which concluded on the same day instead of the originally planned two days.

For the Minister of Territorial Administration, the amended charter sends a strong message that the Burkinabe people have sent to the international community, demonstrating their maturity and discernment.

« You have just rewritten a new page in the history of our country. A land with centuries-old traditions that has been built thanks to patriotism, integrity, dialogue, constant commitment, and resilience in the face of adversity of its sons and daughters determined to push back, in unity of hearts, the (dark) forces, and, in the diversity and complementarity of skills, the barriers of impossibility and adversity », said Emile Zerbo.

The amended charter also stipulates that henceforth, political parties of all stripes will have 12 representatives in the Legislative Assembly of the Transition (ALT).
