Burkina Faso: New government in Burkina Faso, between continuity and strategic adjustments
Burkina Faso has unveiled the composition of its new transitional government, which shows notable continuity with the previous team and some strategic adjustments. Led by Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, recently appointed Prime Minister, the government consists of 24 members, the majority of whom come from the team of Apollinaire Kyelem de Tambela.
Several key figures retain their positions, demonstrating a desire for stability in crucial sectors. Émile Zerbo remains Minister of State in charge of Territorial Administration and Mobility. Likewise, Commander Ismaël Sombié, Minister of Agriculture, and Aboubaker Nacanabo, Minister of Economy and Finance, continue to lead their respective departments. Mahamadou Sana, as Minister of Security, maintains his vital role in the fight against armed groups.
Notable changes strengthen the team. The Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Célestin Simporé, has been appointed Minister of Defense, a strategic decision in a tense security context. Gilbert Ouédraogo, former Head of Communication for the Presidency, becomes the government spokesperson, while Commander Pélagie Kaboré takes charge of the Ministry of Humanitarian Action, a key sector to address the needs of displaced populations.
The departure of Bassolma Bazié, the former Minister of State in charge of the Civil Service, comes as a surprise. Mathias Traoré, previously Secretary-General of the government, succeeds him. This replacement could signify a shift towards specific administrative reforms.
Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo seems to be relying on a team that combines experience and renewal to tackle security, economic, and humanitarian challenges. This balanced choice reflects the priority given to stability in a country facing persistent insecurity and a delicate political transition.
