Burkina Faso: Official launch of free cataract surgery campaign by the Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health of Burkina Faso, in partnership with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and Islamic Relief France (SIF), officially launched a free cataract surgery campaign on Friday, July 26, 2024, in Ouagadougou. This initiative aims to operate on 4.000 people affected by this eye disease in 12 regions of the country.
Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens, are the leading cause of reversible blindness worldwide, particularly affecting populations in developing countries. In Burkina Faso, cataracts pose a significant public health issue. Many people, especially in rural areas, lack the financial means to access necessary treatments, leading to vision loss that severely impacts their quality of life and ability to participate actively in society.
“This second project of free cataract surgery aims to conduct around 13.600 ophthalmological consultations across the thirteen regions of Burkina Faso and to give hope to 4,000 people affected by cataracts through free cataract surgery in public health facilities such as regional hospitals and district hospitals”, said Dr. Issa Ouédraogo, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health.
The free cataract surgery campaign, supported by the IDB and SIF, is a concrete response to this public health issue. By operating on 4.000 people in 12 regions, this initiative goes beyond mere medical intervention. It aims to restore sight to thousands of Burkinabe, allowing them to regain their independence and improve their overall well-being.
Thanks to the collaboration between the Ministry of Health, the IDB, and SIF, this campaign represents a significant step towards improving visual health and the general well-being of the Burkinabe population, while also strengthening the capacities of the national health system.
