Burkina Faso: President Ibrahim Traoré’s food self-sufficiency policy produces concrete and promising results
The food self-sufficiency policy initiated by President Ibrahim Traoré continues to yield tangible and encouraging results. A striking example of this is the exceptional potato production in the village of Koulogo, where over 7,000 tons are expected this season. This performance is the result of the intensive cultivation of 235 hectares dedicated to this crop, demonstrating the effectiveness of the strategies put in place to strengthen the country’s food security.
In this context, Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel OUEDRAOGO, accompanied by the Minister in charge of Agriculture, Commander Ismaël SOMBIE, visited the site on February 6, 2025. This visit allowed them to see firsthand the progress made through the concerted efforts of the government and local producers. In addition to the massive potato production, a three-hectare market gardening area was developed in Sector 6 of Kaya for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), providing them with an opportunity for resilience and economic empowerment.
These achievements confirm the Burkinabe government’s determination to make agriculture a true driver of development. Through concrete actions and an ambitious agricultural policy, the country is gradually moving toward food self-sufficiency, reducing its reliance on imports and strengthening its food sovereignty.
