Burkina Faso: Prime Minister Urges International Community to Increase Cooperation in the Fight Against Terrorism.
Burkinabe Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambela actively participated in the Accra Initiative Summit, promoting regional cooperation to combat violent extremism and cross-border insecurity, In the Gulf of Guinea and Sahelian countries. A total of seven states from the sub-region attended the conference, which was held in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, under the theme “Accra Initiative: A credible, preventive and coordinated response to security challenges in coastal and Sahelian states”.In his speech during the meeting, the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso did not go out of his way to criticize the indifference of Burkina Faso’s neighbouring countries and the international community on the deterioration of security in his country.
“It has been six years since Burkina Faso was attacked and neither the neighbours nor the international community is moved. It is no longer time for meetings and procrastination, but it is time to act, because while you are in your meetings, Burkina Faso is losing human lives,” he said indignantly, before inviting the heads of state to a synergy of action in the face of the scourge that is undermining Faso: “I invite African countries to engage in frank military cooperation that will go into the field, because it is no longer time to wait for international aid,” he added.
The head of government also noted the efforts made by his boss Ibrahim Traoré for a more effective fight against terrorist violence.
Indeed, the Head of State launched the recruitment of 5,000 volunteers to support the armed troops, an appeal that was accepted by the population, who enlisted as volunteers for the defence of the fatherland (VDP).
Speaking on the same subject, Beninese President Patrice Talon said that the security situation in Burkina Faso is a disgrace for Africa and the member countries of the Accra Initiative must respond vigorously. “The situation in Burkina Faso is not beyond the means of our countries, because our enemies are not better equipped than we are,” he said.
The Accra Initiative is a body created in 2017 by 5 ECOWAS Heads of State and Government to define regional cooperation against growing terrorism in the sub-region. These are the leaders of Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo. Two years later, the body was joined by Mali and Niger as observer members. Nigeria has also recently been admitted as an observer.
