Burkina Faso / RAMU: Prime Minister signs up and calls for national mobilization
On December 3, 2024, Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Me Appolinaire Joachimson Kyélem de Tambèla, officially enrolled in the country’s Universal Health Insurance Scheme (RAMU) in Ouagadougou. By personally signing up, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to this vital social initiative and encouraged fellow citizens to follow his example.
After completing his registration, Prime Minister Kyélem de Tambèla commended the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAMU) for its tireless efforts in reaching a wide audience over the past month. “Solidarity is a golden rule in our country”, he stated, urging every eligible citizen to embrace the vision of universal health coverage.
The Prime Minister also linked RAMU to the broader vision of Burkina Faso’s revolutionary leader, the late Thomas Sankara, who had envisioned a universal healthcare system accessible to all. Although this vision had not progressed over the decades, Me Kyélem de Tambèla assured that the current government is resolute in making RAMU a sustainable reality.
According to Soumaila Gamsoré, the Director-General of CNAMU, six decrees have been passed to ensure the successful implementation of RAMU, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving healthcare for all citizens. Since the launch of the enrollment process, over 250,000 Burkinabe have already registered, a promising milestone toward universal health coverage.
The registration process will continue across all regions of the country, with the aim of reaching as many citizens as possible. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the initiative, which not only promises to enhance healthcare services but also strengthens the bonds of solidarity within the nation.
With RAMU, Burkina Faso is taking a decisive step toward inclusive healthcare, aligning with its goal of ensuring that quality medical care is accessible to all. The government is calling for widespread mobilization to make this national project a success.
