Burkina Faso/Road safety: Wearing a helmet, Minister Mahamadou SANA takes to the road
In Burkina Faso, the Minister of Security is ensuring the effective enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly for two-wheeled vehicle riders. Starting from January 1, 2025, nationwide operations began to monitor and raise awareness about the mandatory helmet law for two-wheeled vehicle users.
During a visit to the western region of the country over the weekend, Minister Mahamadou SANA actively participated in the inspections. Keen to ensure compliance with the rules and the smooth running of operations that can guarantee road safety, the minister took to the streets for the controls. It was an opportunity for him to educate citizens on the importance of this measure and urge strict adherence.
For several months, Burkina Faso’s authorities have been working tirelessly to drastically reduce road accidents and their devastating consequences. Like many countries in the region, road accidents in Burkina Faso often involve motorcyclists, leading to serious injuries, trauma, or even fatalities.
This mandatory helmet law was introduced and reinforced in recent years to save lives and reduce road accidents. The ongoing monitoring aims to integrate this rule into the daily habits of riders and passengers, as is already the case in many countries across the continent. The minister called on his fellow citizens to stay disciplined in order to save their lives and those of others.
In addition to road safety, the Minister of Security also ensured the smooth operation of the weigh station at the National Road Safety Office (ONSER) on the Tanghin-Dassouri and Bobo-Dioulasso roads. He reminded the control officers of the importance of respecting human rights during their interventions, while encouraging vigilance and professionalism.
