One week before the launch of the 17th edition of the International Handicrafts Fair of Ouagadougou (SIAO), scheduled from October 25 to November 3, 2024, preparations are successfully nearing completion. The National Organizing Committee (CNO) held a press conference on Thursday, October 17, 2024, in Ouagadougou to discuss the final details.

The committee’s vice-president, Oumarou Barro, who is also the Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Handicrafts, reported on the exceptional participation of exhibitors and visitors.

This edition, themed “African Handicrafts, Youth Entrepreneurship, and Empowerment,” highlights the importance of handicrafts as a development lever for youth in Africa. To date, over 2.000 exhibitors from 22 countries, including Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria, Italy, Iran, and Burkina Faso, have confirmed their participation, distributed across climate-controlled and ventilated pavilions. With more than 80% of the 700 stands already reserved, the momentum for SIAO 2024 is well underway.

Professional buyers and visitors are also expected in large numbers. More than thirty have already confirmed their registration, coming from 17 countries across Africa, Europe, America, and Asia. For media coverage, over 30 national and international media outlets have also confirmed their presence, with the committee planning to welcome a total of around fifty media representatives.

Oumarou Barro reassured the public regarding the security measures in place: “Our brave defense and security forces are ensuring that the Fair takes place in a secure environment.” With the support of numerous partners and sponsors, SIAO 2024 is set to be a major event, ready to welcome nearly 350.000 visitors. This biennial fair is a true showcase for African handicrafts and an empowerment opportunity for youth, a key sector for the continent’s future.
