Burkina Faso: Strengthening the army under President Ibrahim Traoré, a strategic rise in power
Since his rise to the presidency in September 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré has initiated significant reforms to enhance the operational capabilities of the Burkinabe military. In response to growing insecurity and the increasing frequency of terrorist attacks, these measures are aimed at repositioning the National Armed Forces as a pillar of the country’s defense and sovereignty.
One of President Traoré’s main priorities has been the acquisition of modern weaponry. Under his leadership, Burkina Faso has substantially strengthened its military arsenal, notably with the purchase of surveillance drones, armored vehicles, and weapons systems tailored to asymmetric warfare. These new capabilities enable the armed forces to carry out more precise offensives and monitor the vast expanses of the country’s territory.
The head of state has also worked to improve the material conditions of soldiers. Significant efforts have been made to equip the troops with adequate logistical resources, such as reinforced uniforms, bulletproof vests, helmets, and advanced communication equipment. Strategic military bases have been modernized to accommodate new technologies and optimize operational readiness.
Recognizing that victory over terrorist forces requires a large and well-trained army, President Traoré has launched massive recruitment campaigns. Thousands of young Burkinabe citizens have joined the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP). These new recruits undergo intensive training, tailored to the realities of the battlefield and emphasizing cooperation between various military units.
These efforts reflect Captain Traoré’s commitment to equipping Burkina Faso with a strong military capable of restoring territorial integrity and protecting its citizens. The enhancement of military capacity has not only boosted troop morale but also strengthened citizens’ confidence in their defenders.
Despite the ongoing challenges, the government’s commitment to building a modern and efficient army represents a major strategic advancement. The Burkinabe military is becoming a key force in the fight against terrorism and in stabilizing the country.
