Burkina Faso: Strengthening the fight against cybercrime, the Minister of Security visits the BCLCC in Ouagadougou

As part of President Ibrahim TraorĂ©’s strategic directives, Minister of Security, Commissioner Mahamadou Sana, visited the Central Cybercrime Combat Brigade (BCLCC) in Ouagadougou on Thursday, October 24, 2024. This visit aimed to better understand the working conditions of the Brigade and engage in dialogue with its personnel.

Welcomed by Police Commissioner Bantida Samire Yoni, commander of the BCLCC, Minister Sana learned about the progress made by this specialized unit in the fight against cybercrime. Commander Yoni presented the significant results achieved by the Brigade while highlighting the daily challenges faced. Among ongoing projects, the BCLCC is developing a mobile and online platform that will allow the public to report suspicious online behaviors. Commissioner Yoni noted that this new tool would enhance the Brigade’s effectiveness by mobilizing citizen vigilance in combating cybercrime.

In his speech, Minister Mahamadou Sana congratulated and encouraged the BCLCC staff. He emphasized the crucial role of this structure, which also supports other technical services within the Burkinabè administration. Acknowledging the importance of current technological challenges, Minister Sana assured that the concerns raised by the Brigade, particularly regarding resources and equipment, would be carefully considered to improve the team’s operational capabilities.

“In this digital age, your work is more crucial than ever to ensure security in the national digital space. The government is committed to supporting the actions of the BCLCC so that it remains at the forefront of developments in ICT”, stated the Minister, highlighting the strategic support planned for this key struc   ture.

The BCLCC is tasked with preventing and prosecuting offenses related to information and communication technologies in Burkina Faso. By expanding its regional representations, it aims to strengthen its presence throughout the national territory for a swift and effective response to cyber threats.
