Burkina Faso: The 19th Digital Week opens in Ouagadougou with a Focus on FinTech

The Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélem de Tambèla, officially launched the 19th edition of the Digital Week in Ouagadougou on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Held under the theme “Digital Transformation and Economic Development: The Challenges of FinTech”, the event will run until November 15, with Mali and Niger as guest countries.

Inside the “Kilimandjaro” Pavilion at the SIAO, a full room of digital experts, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and financiers gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by financial technologies (FinTech) in the Burkinabe context. In a speech delivered by the Minister for Digital Transition, Dr. Aminata Zerbo/Sabané, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of FinTech as catalysts for economic and social transformation.

“FinTech represents a key lever for strengthening financial inclusion, reducing service costs, and speeding up transactions. They facilitate access to financial services, even for rural and vulnerable populations”, said the Prime Minister. He added that digital technology is a “strategic ally” in accelerating Burkina Faso’s development, particularly through the digitization of administrative processes in key sectors such as justice, health, and the military.

The 2024 edition of Digital Week thus serves as a unique platform to assess the impact of technological innovations on the financial sector and to provide relevant recommendations for optimizing the use of digital financial services. “We expect experts to share their analysis on the evolution of FinTech and its contribution to our country’s economic development”, emphasized Apollinaire Kyélem de Tambèla.

The event will also feature discussions on the future of digital technology in Africa, exhibitions of technological innovations, and training sessions aimed at entrepreneurs and policymakers.
