Burkina Faso: The government demands the sovereignty of the people
Burkina Faso has demanded greater sovereignty in the face of its former colonial power France.
After calling for the departure of the French army, Burkinabe authorities have announced the end of operations of the French Sabre Force. This occurred three weeks after they had denounced defense agreements between the two countries.
According to the government the denunciation of these agreements, was not a diplomatic rupture.
Burkina Faso had denounced the agreement on the status of French forces in the country in January, giving one month for French forces to leave the territory.
The Sabre troop, a contingent of 400 special forces, thus organized a solemn flag-lowering ceremony marking the official end of operations on Burkinabe soil.
Since the rise to power of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Ouagadougou-Bamako axis has significantly strengthened. An idea of a federation between Mali and Burkina Faso is being considered.
«We can establish a flexible federation that can continue to strengthen and respect the aspirations of each country» said the Burkina Faso Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim De Tambèla, during his visit to Mali.
The foreign ministers Olivia Rouamba, Abdoulaye Diop, and Mory Sandan Kouyate, respectively from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea, have indicated that they will undertake joint initiatives to obtain the lifting of sanctions imposed by ECOWAS.
These various sanctions impact the development process of the sanctioned countries. Furthermore, Bamako, Ouagadougou, and Conakry wish to initiate common socioeconomic projects to boost their respective economies.
