CAN 2023: Mali eliminate Burkina Faso and return to Côte d’Ivoire in quarter-finals

Mali defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 on Tuesday, January 30, in the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations. Sharp at the beginning of the first and second halves, the Eagles then faced challenges before securing the victory at the final whistle. They will face Ivory Coast in the next round.

Unbeaten since March 28, Mali eliminated Burkina Faso (2-1) on Tuesday, January 30, in the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations. Effective from the start of the first half by causing Edmond Tapsoba’s own goal (3′), the Eagles once again troubled their neighbors at the beginning of the second half.

Lassine Sinayoko (47′) gave his teammates a two-goal lead as they comfortably dominated the match. However, the script changed with the reduction of the score through a penalty by Bertrand Traoré (57′).

In injury time, the Stallions found the resources to equalize, only to be disappointed after an offside position was flagged. Semi-finalists in 2021, they won’t go any further this year.

On the other hand, Mali will reach the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, eleven years after their last appearance at this stage of the competition. Eric Chelle’s team will face the host country, the miraculous Ivory Coast, in the quarterfinals.
