CAN 2024: Algeria upset by Angola, concedes draw
Long dominating against Angola, after opening the score, Algeria was finally held in check by Palancas Negras (1-1) for the first day of Group D of CAN 2024. The Fennecs certainly dreamed of a better start after a failed African Cup two years ago.
Is this still the sign of a healing still not complete? Algeria, which has arrived in Côte d’Ivoire, with the firm intention of turning the page of the failure of the 2022 CAN (elimination in the first round) has not started the 2024 edition in the best way. This draw (1-1), if it does not threaten the chances of the Fennecs to qualify in the last 16, inevitably awakens bad memories for the supporters of the Greens.
Against Angola, who have been behind a victory in the African Cup for eight matches, Djamel Belmadi’s men have launched their match well. Baghdad Bounedjah thus materialized the domination of the Fennecs, since the kick-off, on a nice opening of the score (19th).
Well found by a deep pass from Youcef Belaïlli, the striker takes the offering from an outside foot to beat the Angolan goalkeeper Neblu. The Oranais, on fire, could have even offered the goal of this beginning of CAN on a superb bicycle (25th), but a slight offside position deprives him of this jewel that would have made the rounds of social networks.
