The arrival of Starlink, the satellite division of SpaceX, in the Chadian telecommunications market marks a historic turning point. After nearly a year of negotiations, the Chadian government has officially signed an agreement with the American operator, granting it an operating license. This decision, praised by internet users, responds to a pressing demand for more competition and better internet services.

The goal is ambitious: to provide high-speed internet access across the entire country, including the most remote areas. This initiative, led by the Minister of Telecommunications, Dr. Boukar Michel, represents a major step forward for digital inclusion. It also puts an end to the speculation sparked by Elon Musk’s announcement last November.

Starlink is thus the first satellite operator authorized to operate in Chad. In a country where internet access remains expensive and unreliable, this technology promises fast, stable, and accessible connections, even in regions far from major cities. This digital revolution could stimulate economic and social development, especially in key sectors like health, education, and entrepreneurship.

However, Starlink’s entry is not without its detractors. Local operators are concerned about fierce competition from a giant with an extensive network and impressive technological power. To ease tensions, the Electronic and Postal Communications Regulatory Authority (ARCEP) gathered local stakeholders in January.

For Chadian authorities, the goal is clear: to accelerate the country’s digital transformation. The Minister of Telecommunications hailed this development as a decisive step toward equal access to digital services for all Chadians.

Starlink’s arrival in Chad opens new prospects for the country while presenting challenges for local operators. This initiative could very well mark the beginning of a new digital era, where connectivity becomes a key driver of development for the entire population.
