China: Toward a political solution to the war between Russia and Ukraine

On Thursday, May 16, 2024, at dawn, Vladimir Putin arrived in the Chinese capital for a two-day visit. This state visit, the second in less than six months, sends a strong signal of strengthened ties between Russia and China, especially regarding the invasion of Ukraine.

In a joint statement to the press, Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to China for its peace initiatives related to the conflict. He stated that the China-Russia relationship is « a factor of stability on the international stage » and emphasized that « it is not opportunistic and is not directed against anyone ».

Xi Jinping responded, « China is ready to work with Russia to support fairness and justice in the world ». These statements come as the Russian army makes significant advances in Ukraine, capturing 278 square kilometers in the past week, mainly in the Kharkiv region (Northeast), where Moscow launched an offensive in early May.

In a joint press release after their meeting, echoing Vladimir Putin’s favorite terms, Beijing and Moscow stated the need to avoid any decisions that could prolong the hostilities and escalate the conflict. This seems to be aimed at Europeans and Americans, as the Kremlin continually claims that Western arms deliveries to Ukraine are prolonging the war.

The day before this visit to Beijing, Vladimir Putin praised these advances during a televised meeting with high-ranking officers. « Since the beginning of the year, our troops have been constantly improving their positions in all directions every day. They are meeting all the objectives set by the Ministry of Defense », he said. « The speed with which we respond to current demands gives us confidence that we will meet all our objectives ».

While China regularly calls for respecting the territorial integrity of all countries (implying Ukraine included), it also urges consideration of Russia’s security concerns. « Both parties agree that a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine is the way forward », Xi Jinping told the press, reminding that China’s position on this issue has always been clear.
