DRC: WHO warns of mysterious disease in Kwango province
The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the alarm about an unknown disease that has been affecting the Panzi health zone, located in the Kwango province in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since last October. This situation presents a high risk of contamination, exacerbated by logistical and security challenges in the region.
According to the WHO statement, the geographic remoteness of the affected area complicates access to care and the necessary interventions to contain the outbreak. Local populations are particularly vulnerable, as healthcare infrastructure is limited and security conditions hinder the response efforts of health authorities and international organizations.
The first reported cases have raised growing concerns, with the origin and exact nature of the disease remaining uncertain. Reported symptoms vary, making diagnosis difficult and requiring in-depth analyses to identify the pathogen and its mode of transmission. WHO is working closely with the DRC Ministry of Health to intensify surveillance, provide medical resources, and strengthen local capacities.
In the face of this health crisis, WHO is calling for urgent mobilization from the international community. Preventing the spread and effectively managing the disease requires increased funding, enhanced coordination, and a spirit of solidarity to protect populations and prevent a broader health crisis.
