ECOWAS: The image of the institution on its lower level. How did it happen?
It is time for the other Heads of State, members of ECOWAS, to react and restore a different image to the institution. The populations of the West African sub-region have not understood the choice of the Heads of State who appointed President Umaru Sissoko Embalo.
Indeed, he is the President of Guinea-Bissau for a first term, but what is his track record that justifies entrusting him with the organization of the sub-region?
According to several reports, President Umaru Sissoko Embalo’s behavior reflects his past, where he has constantly sought easy gains by currying favor in various countries.
Information gathered from some members of his cabinet suggests that the President of ECOWAS works for his own interests rather than the interests of the institution and its members. With Embalo, France has the ideal man at hand to use, manipulate, and achieve their objectives.
Mr. Umaru Sissoko Embalo initially disregarded the revolt of African youth in general, and Burkinabe youth in particular, who reject French imperialism.
This negligence has placed ECOWAS at its lowest point in every sense of the term. To the extent that no decision of this institution is respected not only by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea but also by other Heads of State of member countries.
The Heads of State, who are members of ECOWAS, must take action to restore the image of this institution and review the criteria for leading this sub-regional institution.
