Equatorial Guinea: Another round of squandering funds to celebrate a stolen victory.

For almost 10 days now, the PDGE has been celebrating a so-called “victory” in the November 20 general elections. At the presidential residence, in stadiums, public buildings and squares, at the party headquarters, in short everywhere in the country, the dictatorial party and the plundering minority are spending huge fortunes, to show a semblance of enthusiasm in this country hit by an unprecedented economic crisis.

As soon as the electoral campaign in Equatorial Guinea got underway, our editorial staff predicted a repeat of the epilogue of previous electoral processes. The Nguema regime is known as a magician’s regime, which magically leads the people, who deplore its governance, to always give it their votes with astronomical percentages.

The “victory” won last month is hardly surprising. The institutions and major decision-making centres of Equatorial Guinea are run by the caciques of power, which puts the PDGE in a favourable position.

Despite the colossal resources that the exploitation of oil and other deposits brings to the state, corruption, embezzlement, favouritism, financial mismanagement, and calamitous governance are all evils that plunge the population day by day into a glaring misery. Added to this are the disastrous effects of the Covid pandemic.

At a time when NGOs and international organisations are sounding the alarm about the deplorable economic situation affecting the majority of households, the Nguema clan and company prefer to squander fortunes on a victory acquired through fraud and corruption.
