FIFA World Cup/qualifiers: Brazil vs Bolivia 5-1

Brazil had an historic evening. In a comprehensive 5-1 win over Bolivia, the new recruit from Al-Hilal became the Seleçao’s top scorer, ahead of Pele. At the same time, Uruguay were convincing against Chile.

The 2026 World Cup has already begun in South America. After Argentina and Colombia, the qualifiers for the next World Cup continued with an already historic match for Neymar and Brazil. In a broad and easy victory over Bolivia (5-1), the former Parisian became the Seleçao’s all-time top scorer, surpassing King Pele.

However, the No10 struggled for long periods to beat Bolivian keeper Viscarra. Viscarra initially saved a penalty from the evening’s hero, who failed to score for the first time since February 2022. In the end, he was beaten by Rodrygo (24, 53′) and Raphinha (47′). Then came the climax of the match with Neymar’s famous 78th goal.

The new Al-Hilal player was in fine form throughout the match, and finally found the net with a powerful shot from the penalty spot (60′). He could also have scored a splendid goal had it not been for another save from the keeper, but he did manage to grab a late brace (90th+3). Abrego’s 78th-minute equaliser was a mere consolation. After nine months away from the national team, Neymar has made a successful comeback.

There was another match during the night, Uruguay’s 3-1 win over Chile. Without the old dinosaurs of Suarez, Cavani and Muslera, Bielsa’s Celeste put on an attractive display. They took the lead before the break thanks to De la Cruz (38th), who eventually scored twice (71st), and Valverde (45th+1st). Vidal (74th) eased his side’s defeat. Uruguay take 2nd place behind Brazil.
