Football/Benjamin Mendy wins against Manchester City over unpaid salaries
Benjamin Mendy won his legal battle against Manchester City in an English labor court after being acquitted of rape and sexual assault charges. The 30-year-old fullback will recover most of the unpaid wages he claimed, amounting to over €13 million, though he won’t receive the full amount due to the five months he spent in custody, which prevented him from honoring his contract.
The judge ruled that Mendy was “ready and willing” to work but was “prevented from doing so.” The former Monaco and OM player stopped receiving pay from Manchester City in September 2021 after his second indictment and didn’t receive any salary until his contract ended in June 2023.
Mendy, who received financial support from his agent and several teammates, including Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez, stated he had been unfairly treated by the club due to his behavior during the pandemic, particularly hosting parties at his mansion. City had justified suspending his wages by citing his irresponsible behavior.
Benjamin Mendy now hopes Manchester City will act “honorably” and pay the remaining amount of his compensation, or the matter will be decided in a future hearing.
