Football: CAF unveils 2024-2025 interclub competition calendar
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has lifted the veil on the schedule of matches for the upcoming season of interclub competitions, namely the Champions League and the Confederation Cup, in an announcement made yesterday Monday.
According to information released by the continental body in a statement published on its website, the start of this new interclub season will be given by the preliminary round, scheduled from 16 to 18 August. Group phases are planned between October and December of the same year.
For African football fans, the most anticipated moments will take place between March and May 2025, during which there will be the knockout stages and, of course, the finals of the two major competitions.
The CAF also provided details on the number of clubs that the top-ranked member associations will be able to register, based on the CAF index. Thus, twelve of these associations will be able to engage two clubs in the Champions League, and the same number in the Confederation Cup.
A significant change was made to the format of the competition, with the cancellation of the second additional round of the Confederation Cup preliminary round. This means that teams
eliminated in the second round of the Champions League will no longer be relegated to the Confederation Cup. In addition, clubs that qualify for the second round of preliminary round will move directly to the group stage, as explained by the CAF.
