Football / Eliminated from AFCON 2025 Race: Togo’s Éperviers suffer a bitter defeat to Liberia

The Togo national football team, the Éperviers, experienced another disappointment this Wednesday during the 5th matchday of the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Facing Liberia, Togo unfortunately lost 1-0, a result that ends their hopes of qualification.

The match, which was relatively balanced, saw both teams play on equal terms. Despite several chances for both sides, the Éperviers were frustratingly ineffective throughout the game. The turning point came in the 83rd minute when Mo Sangaré converted a penalty awarded to Liberia, punishing Togo for their lack of finishing in front of goal.

This defeat is a major blow for Togo, who had hoped for at least a positive result to keep their qualification hopes alive and put pressure on Guinea going into the final matchday. Unfortunately, with this setback, Togo is eliminated from the race for AFCON, missing out on qualification for the fourth consecutive time, a bitter disappointment for Togolese supporters.

The final matchday of the qualifiers, scheduled for next Sunday, will see the Éperviers face Equatorial Guinea, who have already qualified after Togo’s defeat to Liberia. The match will take place at the Kégué Stadium at 16:00. Although symbolic, this match will have no direct stakes for Togo, but it may offer the team a chance to end on a positive note before embarking on a new phase of rebuilding.
