Football: Exclusion from CAF elections, a favorable outcome for Samuel Eto’o

According to reports, Samuel Eto’o, one of the greatest figures in African football, has won his case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after appealing the decision made by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that had excluded him from the race for a position on its executive committee.
The court overturned the CAF’s decision and restored the possibility for the former Cameroonian striker to participate in the elections scheduled for March 12, 2025, in Cairo. A former iconic player for clubs such as FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea, Eto’o is currently the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot).
For context, he has been involved in several controversies in recent years, including a FIFA ban in September 2024 for behavior deemed offensive and a fine of 180,000 euros imposed by the CAF due to commercial partnerships considered incompatible with the values of sport.
CAS ruled that the CAF had not sufficiently justified Eto’o’s exclusion, thus opening the door for his candidacy. In the upcoming elections, he will attempt to secure a seat on the CAF executive committee, alongside current president Patrice Motsepe, who is running for a second term unopposed.
