Football/ Manchester United stumbles at home as Newcastle secures 2-0 victory
Manchester United ended the year on a disappointing note, losing 2-0 at home to Newcastle on Monday night at Old Trafford. After two consecutive Premier League defeats, the team managed by Ruben Amorim couldn’t turn the tide against a Newcastle side in great form.
The absence of Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, both suspended, weighed heavily on United’s performance. The Red Devils were quickly overrun by a confident Newcastle, who had won their last four competitive matches. Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a close-range header following a lobbed pass from Lewis Hall. Joelinton doubled the lead in the 19th minute, capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Anthony Gordon.
Despite a few attempts from Manchester United to respond, including a missed chance by Rasmus Højlund in the 34th minute, the first half was dominated by Newcastle, who had 69% possession after just 15 minutes. In the second half, although United pushed to get back into the game, they could not break down Newcastle’s defense, and the score remained unchanged.
This defeat, their fourth across all competitions, leaves Manchester United in a worrying 14th place in the Premier League, just seven points above the relegation zone. On the other hand, Newcastle’s victory saw them rise to 5th place with 32 points, ahead of Manchester City and Bournemouth.
