Football: New controversy around Vinicius Jr. , in the case of racist insults

Real Madrid’s Brazilian star Vinicius Jr. was interviewed by a judge in Valencia on Thursday as part of the investigation into the racist insults he was subjected to during a league match in the same city on 21 May.

The hearing took place by videoconference from a court in Madrid. He left after giving his evidence, behind closed doors, without saying a word to the press waiting outside the court.

According to reports, Vinicius told the judge that he felt «offended» by the insults he received that day at the stadium. He repeated that the insults were «about his skin colour», and came from the whole stadium.

While the Real Madrid player considers himself to be the victim of racist insults and intends to pursue his case to the end, his first meeting with the courts has left some questions unanswered. For their part, Valencia were quick to react, asking the Brazilian international to amend his remarks.

«Racism has no place in football or in society, but it cannot be fought with false ideas and unfounded lies. Valencia fans cannot be described as racists, and Valencia CF demands that Vinicius Jr. publicly rectify the statement he made this morning» said the Spanish club, Valencia.
