Real Madrid player David Alaba suffers from a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee, the Spanish club said Sunday in the wake of the 4-1 victory against Villarreal in the league.
« Following tests on our player David Alaba, he was diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee. The player will be operated in the coming days », Real Madrid wrote in a brief statement.
Alaba, 31, had to leave the field in the 35th minute on Sunday in Real’s 4-1 victory against Villarreal in the Spanish championship. He is the third Real player to suffer such a knee injury since the beginning of the season after Thibaut Courtois and the Brazilian Eder Militao.
The Austrian international is now racing against the clock to compete in the Euro with his country next summer. Austria was placed in Group D with France, the Netherlands and the winner of the Track A dam between Poland, Wales, Finland and Estonia.
