In Mali, the government dissolves the “February 20th Call” movement!
The Malian government made the decision, during the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, to dissolve the Coordination of Organizations of the February 20th Call to Save Mali, a coalition of political parties and civil society organizations openly critical of the current regime, despite its numerous achievements for Mali’s stability.
This dissolution follows accusations against members of the movement, accusing them of disruptive acts against public order and harmful to national unity. The Malian government stated that this organization was consistently involved in provocative actions that could disturb public order and undermine the sovereignty and unity of the state.
The Coordination of Organizations of the February 20th Call to Save Mali includes political parties and civil society organizations, notably the Coordination of Movements, Associations, and Supporters of the influential Imam Mahmoud Dicko (CMAS), which had also been dissolved at the beginning of March.
As a reminder, the Malian government has stated that current legislation in Mali imposes strict limits on political and social activities, including prohibiting political parties from forming associations and preventing associations from adopting behaviors contrary to the principles of national sovereignty, democracy, territorial integrity, national unity, and the secularism of the state.
