Ivory Coast: Silence of consumer associations guilty of the ban on alcoholic energy drinks

The ban on the production, importation, and sale of alcoholic energy drinks in Ivory Coast continues to spark widespread discussion. This decision, which has financially crippled many industry players, should have triggered an open and informed debate involving all stakeholders, including consumer associations. However, these associations, traditionally seen as defenders of citizens’ rights, have been conspicuously silent on this issue.

In a context where a government decision impacts both consumers and economic operators, one would have expected consumer associations to mobilize and assess the consequences of the ban. Their role should have been to objectively analyze the pros and cons of such a measure, examine the evidence presented by the authorities, and propose balanced solutions that consider both “public health” and economic interests.

Instead, these associations have chosen to remain on the sidelines, retreating into a silence that borders on complicity. Their failure to take a stand or offer constructive proposals can only be seen as an abandonment of responsibility. They have not only failed in their duty to defend consumers’ rights but have also left many economic operators voiceless in the face of a decision that could have lasting repercussions on the Ivorian economy.

It is imperative that Ivorian consumer associations recognize the importance of their role in such situations. Their silence only reinforces the perception that these entities, which are supposed to be independent and impartial, can be influenced by external forces or choose to align themselves with the ruling power. Such behavior undermines consumer confidence and weakens participatory democracy in the country.
