Mali: Abdoulaye Maïga officially takes over as Prime Minister
On Friday, November 22, 2024, Mali marked a significant moment in its political transition with the handover of power between outgoing Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga and his successor, General Abdoulaye Maïga. The ceremony, held at the Prime Minister’s office, was attended by Acting Deputy Cabinet Director Youssouf Sanogo, and took place in a respectful and professional atmosphere.
Choguel Kokalla Maïga, who was dismissed by President Assimi Goïta earlier in the week, expressed his support for his successor, saying, “You already know how the system works. I thank you and wish you good luck,” signaling a smooth transition.
General Abdoulaye Maïga, appointed Prime Minister on Thursday, had previously acted in this role in 2022 during Maïga’s hospitalization. Upon assuming office, he swiftly formed a new government of 28 members, which was announced through a presidential decree broadcast on national television. The reshuffle saw the departure of seven ministers, but maintained a strong military presence in key strategic positions. General Sadio Camara continues as Minister of Defense, while General Daoud Aly Mohammedine retains his role as Minister of Security.
The new cabinet includes three women, one of whom is Colonel Assa Badiallo Touré, appointed as Minister of Health. Abdoulaye Diop remains at the helm of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The new government faces significant challenges, including tackling insecurity, strengthening public administration, and advancing the political transition process. This reshuffle, while strategic, will be closely watched by both citizens and the international community. General Abdoulaye Maïga is now at the forefront of efforts to stabilize the country and guide it toward a brighter future.
